Abstract painter Raf Simpson celebrated the opening of Between Frequencies with Spotlight Magazine at J. Mackey Gallery in East Hampton on Thursday, September 3rd. Curated by Courtney Daniels, the six-day exhibition opened August 31st and remained on view through September 5th at 62 The Circle.
The exhibition presents a tightly edited series of large-scale abstract paintings exploring structure, movement, and tension. Working primarily with acrylic and layered pigments, Simpson refined his visual language through a process of revision, experimenting with shapes, color, alignment, and repetition while allowing traces of that evolution to remain visible.
Scale is central to the series, with the smallest work measuring 60 by 48 inches. Each composition balances a clear internal structure with subtle shifts and interruptions, creating a sense of movement and tension across the canvas. Simpson approaches the work with an architectural sensibility, considering rhythm and space without directly referencing built forms.
Among the exhibition’s standout works are Trouble Will Find Me, which introduces a sense of instability within a strong structural framework; Seeing Double, which explores repetition and misalignment; and Can’t Get These Thoughts Out of Me, a layered composition that evokes the pressure and repetition of recurring thoughts.
With Between Frequencies, Simpson pushes his practice into new territory, creating an immersive body of work that remains deliberately unresolved, existing somewhere between order and disruption.
