Ian Schrager joined Fern Mallis on September 30th for the latest installment of Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis, sitting down for a wide-ranging conversation about the creative vision, cultural instincts, and design philosophy that have defined his five-decade career.
As the co-creator of Studio 54 with Steve Rubell, Schrager helped establish one of New York’s most legendary cultural landmarks, where fashion, music, art, and celebrity converged to define an era. But nightlife was only the beginning. In 1984, Schrager introduced Morgans and helped pioneer the boutique hotel concept, replacing the anonymity of traditional hotels with individuality, thoughtful design, and an atmosphere as carefully considered as the spaces themselves.

He continued to reshape hospitality with the Royalton, followed by groundbreaking properties and brands including Delano, Mondrian, PUBLIC, and EDITION. Throughout his career, Schrager has brought together architecture, interior design, food, music, fashion, and nightlife to create experiences that extend well beyond the traditional hotel stay.
In conversation with Mallis, Schrager reflected on the creative risks behind some of his most influential ventures, as well as the remarkable cast of cultural figures who became part of his world, from David Bowie and Diana Ross to Tennessee Williams, Vladimir Horowitz, Richard Pryor, and the cast of Saturday Night Live.
The evening offered a look at the ideas behind Schrager’s unmistakable aesthetic and his lasting impact on both hospitality and contemporary culture. After 50 years of innovation, his approach remains rooted in the same quality that has defined his career from the start: curiosity.
