Dr. Rian Maercks, renowned for his signature MAERCKS Lift and The Maercks Institute since 2009, has brought his expertise to the East End with the opening of his new location in East Hampton. While speaking with Dr. Maercks about his advanced techniques, pain management philosophy, and his mission to shift the conversation around cosmetic procedures, Spotlight got to know the man behind the practice. Even during his residency, Dr. Maercks began developing his own approach and coined the term “facial balancing” long before it became a mainstream concept.
“I’ve always had a different, and mostly ahead-of-its-time, way of thinking about plastic surgery. My main focus has always been facial aesthetics approached differently, which was considered radical a decade ago. Now, at least, the verbiage being used is becoming more mainstream.”
Dr. Maercks is also ahead of his time in his views and methodology regarding pain management. Rather than using general anesthesia, he opts for alternative approaches due to the way the brain processes pain signals while under sedation. He believes surgery should not be synonymous with pain, another key element of his evolving philosophy.
“I don’t think surgery has to mean pain. My patients don’t experience pain, and there’s really no reason for it if we can avoid it.”
With the opening of his boutique practice in East Hampton, Dr. Maercks shared what inspired the move. After spending time in the Hamptons over the past five years, he fell in love with its natural beauty and energy. Since opening, he’s seen an overwhelming demand for facial aesthetic work on the East End. Despite the area’s logistical challenges, Dr. Maercks hopes to expand further and continue reshaping perceptions around surgery and facial aesthetics practices.
