In an era where personal style is increasingly defined by individuality, milliner Keith James is bringing the power of the hat back into sharp focus. Founded by designer James Keith, the namesake brand has quietly become a favorite among tastemakers and icons alike—from LeBron James to Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian—thanks to its ability to seamlessly blend timeless craftsmanship with a modern attitude. Rooted in heritage yet inspired by the rhythm of contemporary life, James Keith is redefining what it means to make an entrance.
Below, the designer shares how a lifelong connection to hats shaped his path, the influence of Parisian street style, and why millinery is once again having a major moment.
SPOTLIGHT: Hats have such a rich history in fashion. What initially drew you to millinery, and what keeps you inspired by the craft today?
KEITH: I’m bald, so hats have always been a natural part of my life. It’s something my family embraced early on, and it stayed with me. A great hat adds character and presence—it gives a person a sense of identity the moment they walk into a room.

SPOTLIGHT: Your pieces have been worn by names like LeBron James, Beyoncé, and Kim Kardashian—how does it feel seeing your designs interpreted across such different personal styles?
KEITH: LeBron James is a friend of mine, so it’s always meaningful to have that kind of support. Cedric the Entertainer has also been a supporter from the very beginning, which I deeply appreciate.
SPOTLIGHT: When designing a new collection, do you start with a specific person, mood, or moment in mind? What guides that creative direction?
KEITH: When I design, I’m really designing for myself. I often find inspiration while in Paris, sitting at a café and people-watching. Observing how people move, how they carry themselves, how they express individuality—it opens up my creative perspective. There’s something about Paris and its relationship to fashion that continually inspires me.

SPOTLIGHT: A great hat can completely transform a look. What do you think makes someone a “hat person,” and how do you design for both the bold and the more understated wearer?
KEITH: A hat is often the first thing people notice—it’s your introduction, your first impression. That’s why it’s so important that it represents you well. I’ve found that when I wear a fedora, it naturally draws people in. It creates a sense of intrigue and presence.
SPOTLIGHT: As hats continue to re-emerge in modern wardrobes, how do you see millinery evolving within today’s fashion landscape?
KEITH: I think we’re seeing a real resurgence in millinery. Hatmakers are finding community again, and there’s renewed excitement around the craft. Events like the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot continue to honor its heritage, while younger generations are beginning to embrace styles like the fedora in a fresh, modern way.
