As the colder months commence, many New Yorkers migrate to South Florida to bask in the sunshine a little while longer. For those navigating the dating world during the fall/winter, it can be difficult to maintain meaningful connections between cities.
But fear not, CEO of Kelleher International—the #1 matchmaking firm globally—Amber Keheller-Andrews gave Spotlight the ultimate guide to cuffing season as a “Snowbird.”
Amber, you are the CEO of Kelleher International, the #1 matchmaking firm globally. Where did your interest in matchmaking begin?
My interest in matchmaking began early on, watching my mother build Kelleher International from the ground up. Growing up in a family dedicated to creating meaningful connections, I was inspired by the transformative power of love and the impact it can have on individuals’ lives. This passion has only deepened over the years as I’ve witnessed countless success stories among our clients.
What is your #1 rule when it comes to dating?
My #1 rule is to prioritize open communication. Being honest about your intentions, feelings, and expectations lays the groundwork for a successful relationship. Vulnerability fosters trust, which is essential for any meaningful connection.
It’s officially “cuffing season.” Why do you think singles are more inclined to look for partners during the colder months? Is there any science behind this?
During the colder months, people naturally seek warmth and companionship, which makes cuffing season a popular time for singles to find partners. Psychologically, the holidays and winter festivities often evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for connection. Studies have shown that people are more likely to form relationships in colder months as they seek emotional support and intimacy during this time.
Many of our readers reside in New York, but head to South Florida for the wintertime. How has the dating landscape in South Florida changed due to the increasing amount of “Snowbirds?”
The influx of Snowbirds has significantly enriched the dating landscape in South Florida. This blend of diverse backgrounds and experiences has created a vibrant social scene where singles can connect in more dynamic ways. As a result, we see a mix of traditional dating and a growing number of individuals open to exploring non-traditional relationships.
Do you notice that more people are meeting organically in these dating hot-spots or via apps like Bumble, Hinge, and Tinder? Why do you think this is?
Although dating apps continue to attract users, I’ve noticed a growing preference for authentic connections, particularly in vibrant social hubs like Palm Beach and Miami. The inviting atmosphere in these locations promotes genuine interactions, with many singles seeking the warmth of face-to-face engagements rather than digital exchanges.
In the current dating landscape, many individuals find that what once felt exciting about apps has turned into a source of frustration. The appeal of having endless choices has often led to users feeling overwhelmed, dedicating hours to sorting through profiles without meaningful outcomes. Alarmingly, we’ve found that a significant number of women feel flooded with messages, contributing to a sense of loneliness as they navigate these platforms. Concerns about scams and authenticity further complicate the experience.
At Kelleher International, we understand this evolving dynamic and focus on providing a tailored matchmaking experience that prioritizes deep, meaningful connections. Our strategy is centered on nurturing genuine relationships, steering clear of the superficial interactions common in online dating. As more individuals seek real-world connections, our services offer a reliable pathway for those ready to forge lasting bonds.
What advice would you give to those looking to maintain a long-term relationship while bouncing between cities like New York, Palm Beach, and Miami?
Maintaining a long-term relationship across cities requires strong communication and commitment. Regularly scheduling quality time together, whether in person or virtually, can help nurture the relationship. Establishing shared goals and expectations also fosters a sense of partnership that transcends distance.
Many of New York’s most coveted restaurants have opened South Florida locations and vice versa. Do you think that “Snowbirds” hanging around the same types of places puts them at an advantage or disadvantage in the dating scene? Why?
It can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. On one hand, frequenting familiar venues allows Snowbirds to leverage existing social circles and connections. On the other hand, it may limit their exposure to new individuals. Being open to exploring diverse spaces can enhance their dating experiences and broaden their social network.
What are some of the hottest date spots you’ve been hearing about from your South Florida clients?
At Kelleher, we love to personalize date spots based on the unique vibes of each couple. In Palm Beach, you can’t go wrong with Lola41 at the White Elephant for a chic dining experience, namely some seriously good sushi. If you’re feeling fancy, check out Le Bilboquet—it’s got that upscale flair and a fantastic brunch scene. La Goulue is another gem from New York that everyone loves, and don’t forget to sip on a White Cosmo at Cafe Boulud!
For those looking to hit the dance floor, Cucina is a lively choice, even if the crowd skews a bit younger. And don’t discount West Palm Beach, it is bursting with trendy new spots that are worth exploring.
Now, if you’re in Miami, kick off your day with a leisurely lunch at Mandolin Aegean Bistro, then stroll through the Design District. On Miami Beach, The Drexel is a cute little hideaway on Espanola Way, and Doya in Wynwood serves up some delicious Mediterranean dishes. When it’s time to let loose, Dante’s HiFi is the place to be for cocktails and groovy vinyl tunes.
If you venture a bit further, Coconut Grove has really transformed into date night central! Mr. C’s Bellini restaurant serves up killer espresso martinis, while Krüs Kitchen is all about beautiful dishes and natural wines. Finally, let’s not forget Coral Gables—home to stunning Mediterranean architecture and a classy vibe. Whether you’re enjoying a weekend at The Biltmore or dining at Thomas Keller’s new Bouchon Bistro, there’s no shortage of fabulous spots to explore!
