Indian fine jewelry brand Gyan Jaipur has been livening up the United States with its colorful designs inspired by the landmarks of Jaipur.
Gyan Jaipur recently took up residency in New York City at Bergdorf Goodman, one of the most luxurious department stores around the world. Spotlight sat down with Nikhil Dhaddha, the U.S. Director of Gyan Jaipur to hear more about the brand and this exciting new partnership.
Can you tell our readers a bit about the history of the Gyan Jaipur brand?
The brand was founded in 2017 by my father, my uncle, and both my brothers following the museum, Gyan Museum, which was opened in 2016. Gyan Museum is a tribute to my grandfather, who used to be a collector of artifacts, art, jewelry, carpets, rugs, silver, mouthpieces—you name it—from around the world, but mostly from India.
After the inauguration of the museum, my brother and uncle came up with the idea of opening a jewelry brand called Gyan Jaipur, which inspires its designs from the architectural landscapes and landmarks, as well as one-of-a-kind pieces, inspired by the museum itself. We officially launched Gyan Jaipur in the U.S. two years ago.
What is your role at Gyan Jaipur?
I’m the U.S. Director of Gyan Jaipur, so I handle the wholesale side of it. For instance, I deal with retailers and help produce our couture shows. I have a strong relationship with my sales agent, PR agency, and retailers around the States. I also handle the marketing, PR, celebrities, and magazine articles!
Gyan Jaipur uses so many beautifully colored gemstones in its collections. How does this set the brand apart in the fine jewelry market?
One of the main aspects of our design, as you mentioned, is color. Jaipur is all about color! It’s actually known as the Pink City, but there are so many more colors than that. When you go to all of the markets there are so many beautiful flowers and textiles and the women are dressed in colorful sarees. The overall architectural aspect of Jaipur is so colorful, that’s how we came up with the idea of making Gyan Jaipur as vibrant as possible, while also maintaining our brand DNA and heritage.
Besides having the colors of Jaipur serving as inspiration, what else inspires the designers while curating these fine jewelry collections?
The cultural landmarks of Jaipur and the Gyan Museum piece are huge inspirations. Before we even procure our stones, we walk around the city for inspiration. The famous Hawa Mahal in Jaipur served as inspiration for one of our recent collections. Once we’ve got the theme locked in, we procure stones.
Gyan Jaipur has recently taken residency in New York City at Bergdorf Goodman. What can you tell us about this partnership?
It’s been a lot of hard work over the last couple of years. We’ve always been truthful to our designs and having that everyday wear, everyday color is what ultimately brought us here. It did not just take one meeting; we put in a lot of hours with our PR and marketing teams. We are so excited about this!
What was the process of choosing which collections should be displayed in Bergdorf Goodman? How does Gyan Jaipur appeal to New York City clientele?
My grandfather, father, and uncle have been in the business industry for decades. In Jaipur, we have a lot of international clientele, especially from the U.S. and Mexico. Over the years, we’ve learned what works best with the U.S. clientele and we curate collections that resonate with this market.
Where else are our readers able to shop Gyan Jaipur?
One of our biggest hot spots since we launched in the U.S. has been East Hampton. You can shop Gyan Jaipur at the Mayfair Rocks storefront located next to Louis Vuitton. Everyone goes out there during the summer! Ryan Fine Jewelry & Gift Bar in Palm Desert, CA has also been amazing. And now, anyone can shop the brand at Bergdorf Goodman online or in NYC.
