What’s one secret to running a great bookstore?
Well, there’s really no one secret! It’s a combination—a sometimes hard-to-capture mixture of art and science. Here’s what works for BookHampton: great books, loyal customers, exceptional customer service, strong foot traffic, inventory management (I know… boring!), and the occasional rainy day sometimes helps—no golf and no tennis equals more books and puzzles sold!
What do you think the role of BookHampton is in the community?
BookHampton is a warm, welcoming community space for book lovers and readers of all ages. It’s a place where people can gather, one can linger, or run into old friends, and make new friends. The bookstore offers a diverse range of titles for every and any interest.
Can you tell us about the new manager, Eve Karlin? We’ll miss Jesse!
We all miss Jesse Bartel, who was truly one-of-a-kind. We’re extremely fortunate that our longtime bookseller Eve Karlin has graciously stepped right into the store manager role. Eve is the author of City of Liars and Thieves and Track 61—a BookHampton bestseller! In 2021, Eve was the recipient of a James Patterson Holiday Bookseller bonus awarded by the American Booksellers Association. She lives here in East Hampton with her husband and three children (triplets!).
Where is your favorite place to read in the Hamptons?
My backyard patio, in the shade on a wicker chair and ottoman, or in the early evening on an aluminum beach chair dug into the sand on Main Beach. Maybe with a glass of rosé.
