For those looking to refresh and reboot this season, look no further. Dr. Bushra Helmandi’s Beauty and Body NYC to service all of your needs.
You’re the founder of both Active Physical Therapy & Chiropractic Group and Beauty and Body NYC. What inspired you to launch these businesses?
When I launched my initial business, it was musculoskeletal-based. But I didn’t want to ignore the wellness aspect of life. It shouldn’t take pain for people to take care of. I now have physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, and pain management all under one roof. Then, a couple years ago, I launched Beauty and Body NYC because it was a career of passion. I invested in some spa equipment and it became a full-blown business. I recently decided I want to combine my two businesses into a one-stop shop wellness space.
Where did your interest in beauty and wellness begin?
Like a lot of people, during COVID my diet and lifestyle changed. I noticed the quality of my skin was changing. I looked at my arms and was like, “Is that cellulite?” I went to a cosmetic surgeon and realized it wasn’t actually cellulite, it was a loss of muscle. She recommended I use sculpting devices for skin tightening. The surgeon gave me a recurring treatment plan. But I ended up just buying the devices; that is truly how it started. I needed those devices for me and thought, “Well, if I need them, other people probably do, too.”
What has been the most rewarding part about opening your own high-end MedSpa in NYC?
The most rewarding part is helping people figure out how to achieve their goals. We give people highly personalized treatment plans, it’s not cookie-cutter. We have so many things to offer under one roof, aside from full-blown going under the knife.
What challenges have you faced as a female founder?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced is being someone who is new to the MedSpa world. I had to do so much research because I’m not a cosmetic surgeon, dermatologist, or esthetician. However, it’s also been a blessing because I feel so educated.
What’s the most important part of your job?
I’m a perfectionist. It’s hard for me to scale because I want to be involved in every part of my business. I’m hands-on in every tiny detail, from making post-treatment instruction cards to meeting every patient to touching base with every provider. I feel a little stretched thin, but I feel like you’re not a New Yorker if you don’t feel that way.
What are some of the biggest beauty and aesthetics trends you’re anticipating this season?
The trend I’m seeing people loving is micro-needling with radio frequency. It takes a few months to see results, and they vary from person to person. So many clients have been coming back for that treatment for their face, neck, body, and hands.
How do you service your clientele who summer in the Hamptons?
I have a house in East Hampton, and I love it there. I’d like to think by next summer we’ll hopefully have a permanent pop-up location where people can count on us. I’m always thinking about my Hamptons people!
What kind of experience can customers expect when they come to Beauty and Body NYC?
They can expect a highly personalized experience. I try to be present and meet every single new client. I’m focused on the root cause of our clients’ issues, and we have options for all of them.
What’s one beauty/aesthetics trend you think belongs in the past?
I am not judgmental when it comes to any beauty trends. Different things work for different people. I don’t hear about many people undergoing invasive treatments as much. Preventative treatments and skincare are becoming even bigger.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I don’t ever stop! I love jumping into new projects, but most important I want my businesses to keep evolving. The thing that excites me the most is advancing the concept of creating a one-stop shop for clients to get all of their wellness and beauty treatments.
